Psychology Class

Well, I just finished taking my first exam for my Psych class. I did a lot better then I thought I would, but not as well as I could have. haha It is very... interesting taking a psych class from a non-christian school. The last several chapters we have been going through we have been talking about Frued, Erikson, Watson, and all those lovely people who gave birth to Psychology. Some of them obviously don't have terrible ideas... but some of them are just plan nutballs! Especially Frued and all his little followers. They were kinda messed up in the head I think. I am not really sure what to think of my teacher. Don't really know where she is in all of the different views.

Anyway, I still have to finish writing a paper this week. It is on the different methods of discipline and my views on what works best. This could turn out really good or really bad. Depending on what her views are. I could end up getting an "A" or I could having cops show up at my house under claims of child abuse (and yes, that has happened before... NOT TO ME!! But to a homeschool family we knew). It's a bit scarry when people get into these kind of discussions. With the way the world is now days, a parent can get in trouble for looking at their child wrong. I was in a parenting class a little over a month ago and the lady there talked about how spanking never works. That no real parenting is involved, that it is just the parents responding in anger and just not wanting to have to actually deal with the problem. She said that it is the easy way out for the parent, but all it does to the child is mentally and physically scar them for the rest of their life and teach them to hit people when they make them angry. I almost laughed outloud. Spanking is never fun or the easy way out for a parent. At least it never has been for me and I know it wasn't for my mom. It kills me to have to spank Maggie or the twins (and I end up just giving them such a light tap it really does nothing but hurt their feelings). I also have a personal rule that was taught to me by my mother, never spank out of anger. If I find myself a bit angry with the situation that calls for punishment, I take a time-out for myself before I deal with the issue. I also don't just spank them then leave it at that. I sit there with them for a minute and talk to them. I tell them why they got a spanking and make sure they understand they did something wrong. I then give them a hug and kiss and tell them that I love them. I want them to know that it makes me sad to spank them and that I don't want to... but even if I have to I still love them very much. Personally I think more kids now days need some wippings on the bottom! haha Time-outs and rewards on their own just don't cut it. Kids learn real fast how to manipulate and twist that to their advantage.
